SCE upgrades drymill handling plant for Weyerhaeuser at Cabooture, Queensland

Woodtalk, April 2004

The design requirements were a new system that would handle a capacity of 350m/min out of their new planer, read grade colour codes from their stress grader and grade trim marks by their graders, and sort into packs by grade and length.

The new system was to fit into an existing building and tie in with the existing re-located grading deck and pack re-stacking system.

The timber specification ranged from standard length 2.4m up to 6.0m in 600 steps with the addition of 2.7m stud lengths. Cross section range 70mm x19mm up to 190,, x 45mm. Grades x 7 including heart material.

SCE designed the conveying system, from lug loader to pack take-away chains with unscramblers, to suit the site machinery constraints and with as little impact on the existing building as possible.

A lucidyne grade mark reader system was used to read fluorescent ink stress marks and crayon grade marks. SCE customised and metricated an ASM multi-saw trimmer with moving stud saw design and the sling sorter to suit Weyerhaeuser's needs. ASM machinery was built at SCE's Christchurch workshop.

Mechanical equipment was shipped to Australia and erected over the Christmas shutdown period. SCE supplied and managed system control, electrical, building support steel, walkways, vibrating waste system, engineering, installing and commissioning.
